The design is open to interpretation-alter this one however you like, or employ its principles to create your own. If you’re short a miter saw, a simple 45-degree clip off the bottom of each end is elegant and can be done accurately with a circular saw and Speed Square. You can use a roller stand, or, in my case, a JawHorse did nicely. Note: Since the pieces are long, the key to making this work is out-feed support at the end of each board, to hold the work parallel to the saw deck height. I pass the blade through at a 45-degree angle, clipping about 1/2 inch off the two corners. Enhance your homes roof line with real wood rafter tails. Rafter tails are a design element that add class and style. Rafter tail designs add class to your homes exterior. Real wood rafter tails come in six attractive styles, and are available in thousands of custom sizes. Using the jigsaw as before, I cut the circle.įor the clip cut, I line up each rafter with the round line previously marked on the saw. Rafter tail designs are a great way to accent your homes windows. Making the Cutsįor the circle cut, I place the rafter on sawhorses and use the 3-foot pattern board to trace its edge onto each rafter’s ends. Once the pattern is cut to my liking, I trace its location on the saw deck with my pencil. Next, I make the 1/2-inch clip cut, which I do on the miter saw. Using a jigsaw with a sharp blade, I cut out the semicircle along the line. A 4-inch spread leaves 3-1/2 inches on top of the circle, and I think it makes an elegant proportion. I spread my compass to 4 inches, then pin the point on the corner of the 2 x 8 scrap and scribe the circle.

I use a compass to mark the round portion. This serves as the blank from which I’ll cut a pattern. I then measure and cut each rafter to its finished length.įinally, I cut a 3-foot scrap of a 2 x 8. I do this either with a miter saw or a circular saw with a Speed Square as a saw guide. Rough-sawn and pressure-treated material usually isn’t completely square, or it can be rough-cut on the ends. The design meets both the aesthetic needs of the established Newton neighborhood of Waban while accommodating a young growing family.I prep each rafter by squaring one end of the board. The modernized Colonial Revival above takes cues from the original 1920’s brick Colonial on the property, including exterior details such as rafter tails, accentuated eave overhangs, large front-facing windows, and copper accents. The front door is typically centered under a portico, creating a covered entry, or accented with columns. Large double and triple windows, not present in the original Colonial home design, became a key detail in the Colonial Revival. Some of the typical exterior features found in a Colonial Revival are an asymmetrical front-facing facade with a side-gabled roof and dormers. Since the early 1900s, the Colonial Revival style had taken over as one of the most popular architecturally designed homes, which continued through the 1940s. The Colonial-styled home was introduced in the US by early European settlers. The renovated Ranch above originally featured a prominent two-car front-facing garage which we converted into living space with 12 ceilings the addition houses a garage, mudroom, and expanded kitchen spaces along with four-bedroom suites and an expansive basement for recreation and informal entertaining. Typically Ranch styled homes have an attached garage, a finished basement, and a low-pitched roofline.

RAFTER TAIL DESIGNS WINDOWS
Ranch homes are typically constructed as a single-story emphasizing large windows and sliding doors for optimal indoor/outdoor living. The California Ranch is characterized by an L- or U-shaped structure, while a Suburban Ranch, similar to the California, is more compact and asymmetrical.

It is a quintessential American home design with several iterations.
